Acrylic and Oil on canvas 18x24

This shows three phases of one of the paintings I worked on during the very unique workshop instructed by Morton Kaish "Lessons from the Old Masters for Our Time". We were led through a step-by-step process of working back and forth between realism and abstraction to create paintings that allowed both to coexist. During the week we were also guided to look carefully at certain old master works in various museums. At the same time there two significant exhibitions of Francis Bacon and Picasso in town which we took in. The workshop and the visits to artworks all around the city was heady mix. This workshop was held at the National Academy of Design in a partnership with the Sedona Arts Center. In addition to everything else, the Academy holds its member show at this time of year which was a major boon to all. I will have quite a time distilling all that I saw and experienced. Stage two of the underpainting was done with a lot of palette knife work and then brushwork into the stil wet patches of acrylic paint. This allowed adjustment at a secondary level. Most of this was done to the area around the 'Tower' formation. I will do a little more work with acrylic before switching to oil. The very first application of paint is still showing through and influenceing the colors.

This was a demonstration done in the gallery space at the Sedona Arts Center. Starting with a white canvas I did a few charcoal marks to start the drawing then jumped into a loose acrylic underpainting to start the painting process. I got as far as placing some palette knife work (still in acrylic) on the 'Tower' formation's right hand side. I anticipate finishing with oils after more development in acrylic. More later...

This represents a "first stopping point" for this painting. Next week I will publish the next stage. There is no telling what goes on between a beginning and an end. Usually though it is something difficult. The difficult middle. Though at this stage it is the intent to "keep it all fresh", to not make it difficult. To not make the 'will to finish' something that goes too far. Bonnard said a painting is best when it is two-thirds done. What is your opinion?

I have done a couple paintings at this spot in the past. A recent trip to the Grand Canyon shortly after the snow led to this drawing. Maybe another painting to come. I like the square format on this. When working on paper I allow the composition to grow or shrink as needed. This strange formation actually exists pretty much as portrayed though a layer of snow is making the path out to this promontory seem more walkable than it really would be.

This vertical diptych developed as a way of joining two unlikely scenarios, but then finding a gestalt experience through the integration. It was then included in an exhibition on Greek Myths as "Persephone Rising". I was thinking of it as "A Fathers Anxiety as a Daughter turns 16" (she, the daughter was originally depicted on a tight rope). It was the shows curator that identified the Persephone theme. Persephone rises in the spring from Hades where she is held captive all winter. This initiates the cycle of the seasons. She has to return to Hades each year as part of complex bargain struck between quarreling gods.

This was a loose and bold linear study in soft charcoal. The head ended up looking a little small, though I measured and double checked the proportions. It might be the way it is sourrounded by the dark hair mass. It was an interesting angle, the same pose for the last three drawings.

We went to the nearby town of Certaldo and painted in the upper 'old town'. This is the quintessential small medieval town on the hilltop sourrounded by protective walls with gates and full of intimate little alleys and shops.

First painting in Italy was a small one. I started by laying down some rich over-saturated color and working into it by moderatly adding white. This approach kept it from becoming too gray. The first day was pretty gray and overcast. The fields of grapes though are ripe for harvesting after a few days of rain.

This is a view I could see painting again and again. The color changes quickly in the evening, the sense of depth, looking down into the canyon from here is dramatic and the movement of the cast shadow over the planes of this ridge is fascinating.

One might think that dense layers of history would somehow obscure it but this sparkling glance from Vermeer's "Girl in a Red Hat" arrives as if there were no such thing as history and she has still, just now, turned. This is very close in size to the original.

I have found painted figures have a secret life of their own. This girl started out as a garden sculpture, in fact a graceful Buddah type, but then she changed...a late night Pygmalion effect ...and charmed me at a certain point into leaving her alone in her moment of contemplation.

Demo Stage 1

These three images represent the stages of a process explored in a recent workshop with the wonderful painter and teacher, Morton Kaish, at the Sedona Arts Center. Though we were working from costumed models in the workshop, it was suggested that the process would be very applicable to a landscape scenario. In this first stage, over a ground of Ultramarine Blue at a value of about 3-4, a charcoal line drawing is made exploring the topographical qualities of the image and the major shapes of value. Then a brush with black acrylic paint is used to create a very solid drawing for the next stage.

This stage was done with acrylics and a palette knife, using a limited palette. This can be done with a very intuitive sense of color and space though keeping the values of the source material and starting with the warm tones, leaving the underpainting as the cools. The next stage would be to continue on with the acrylics...but I switched to oils for finishing...

Recent Developments
1. In October I was approached by a filmmaker to do an Expert Village demo/lesson. (See my links area and the post “Plein Air Painter”) as a result of this video a high school art teacher in New Jersey is playing the demonstration to her class and using part of the lesson as the basis for a class project. See attached comment by Kathleen Gilsenan.

2. My recent experience with blogging and the “Daily Painters” phenomenon has inspired a faculty blog at the Sedona Arts Center where I am the director of the school. To initiate the project a number of faculty will participate and between them post “a painting a day”. This will begin in mid January. Watch for links here on my blog as well as on the Sedona Arts Center’s website.

3. I was recently “tagged” by another blogging artist Jason Waskey Jason's work has real variety in terms of subject matter and treatment. Thank you Jason! What this means is that I am to “tag” five other artists and make 5 statements about myself. Here it goes….

1.Though my work may not reveal it, my taste in art is extremely eclectic, perhaps as a result of teaching college art appreciation for a number of years.
2.I secretly read philosophy and interpret the entire “philosophical project” to be, in actuality, all about painting.
3.“Sunset on the Rocks II” is a small piece of the view out of my office window.
4.I once stopped painting for 6 months and only drew – stacked river rocks.
