Camel's Back

Oil on canvas 9x12 $125

While I was painting this a number of people walked out unto the ledge of this formation, but I was shocked when one guy jumped down onto the further and smaller formation - posed for pictures - and then jumped back!

Sunday Morning Light

Oil on canvas 9x12 SOLD

Plein Air at the Grand Canyon from last weekend. When painting from life outdoors I really like to keep it spontaneous without getting overly illustrational.

Sedona Sunrise

"Sedona Sunrise" 6 x 9.25, oil on board, $85

This was a quick plein air painting at one of those spots you see as you are driving around and then have to find the closest place you can paint from that is not in the middle of the road. Sedona is one of those places that really wants to be portrayed a bit panoramic.

In Certaldo

9x12 oil on canvas $125.00
Please Email me for purchase information.

We went to the nearby town of Certaldo and painted in the upper 'old town'. This is the quintessential small medieval town on the hilltop sourrounded by protective walls with gates and full of intimate little alleys and shops.

At last full sunlight! I dragged everything I owned in Italy out into the grapevines and spent the entire afternoon.

Balcony at the Villa

9x12 oil on canvas $125.00

Another composition from the balcony. We had a couple of rainy days but it was possible to work from the balcony without getting wet and then capture light from breaking clouds.

The terrace in the morning with a lemon tree and geraniums in the forground and a back drop of grape fields, cypress and olive. The Villa Fattoria Bacio has that rich feeling of generations of accumulated history.

Italia!

6x8 oil on canvas panel $85
Please
Email me for purchase and shipping information.

First painting in Italy was a small one. I started by laying down some rich over-saturated color and working into it by moderatly adding white. This approach kept it from becoming too gray. The first day was pretty gray and overcast. The fields of grapes though are ripe for harvesting after a few days of rain.

Boynton Canyon 2

9x12 oil on canvas $125

This is another study of a place where I have painted numerous times. This, like the one a few days ago is mostly palette knife painting. I enjoy the sense of mood from a limited palette.

Cathedral Reflection

16 x 20 acrylic on canvas $325
This painting was done during the Marcia Burtt workshop at the Sedona Arts Center. Working in direct sunlight with acrylics was challenging. Marcia reinforced a lot of my own insticts about direct painting. For me what was reinforced was that the painting starts essentially as abstract relationships of shapes of color next to one another. It becomes an image through that process of observation. Her compositional tips in the midst of painting were also very helpful. Marcia will be doing a workshop in Italy through the Arts Center in September, 2008.

Moving

Over the past week I have been moving from Sedona to Flagstaff where my girls attend high school. They have discovered a wonderful charter school in the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA). As one who has traveled far and wide in search of the right educational mix, (ultimately becoming the director of an art school - the do it yourself solution) I can only support them in their pursuit.

This move brings proximity to a new set of subject matter. The Grand Canyon, urban and university scenes, winter scenes and the dramatic drive to work in Sedona! New daily one-session paintings will resume posting on Oct 11.

As the Sedona Arts Center (where I work) moves into its plein air painting season with a festival and associated workshops at the end of October I will be focusing on the landscape. In the last week of October I will be participating in a plein air painting workshop with Marcia Burtt. Marcia is a terrific acrylic plein air painter. For that week I will work in acrylic on a slightly larger scale and will post the results daily.
